FACEBOOK MEMBERS PROTEST ONLINE TRACKING SYSTEM

Faced with its second mass protest by members in its short life span, Facebook, the enormously popular social networking Web site, is reining in some aspects of a controversial new advertising program.

Within the last 10 days, more than 50,000 Facebook members have signed a petition objecting to the new program, which sends messages to users’ friends about what they are buying on Web sites like Travelocity.com, TheKnot.com and Fandango. The members want to be able to opt out of the program completely with one click, but Facebook won’t let them.

Late yesterday the company made an important change, saying that it would not send messages about users’ Internet activities without getting explicit approval each time.

MoveOn.org Civic Action, the political group that set up the online petition, said the move was a positive one.

“Before, if you ignored their warning, they assumed they had your permission” to share information, said Adam Green, a spokesman for the group. “If Facebook were to implement a policy whereby no private purchases on other Web sites were displayed publicly on Facebook without a user’s explicit permission, that would be a step in the right direction.”

Facebook, which is run by Mark Zuckerberg, 23, who created it while an undergraduate at Harvard, has built a highly successful service that is free to its more than 50 million active members. But now the company is trying to figure out how to translate this popularity into profit. Like so many Internet ventures, it is counting heavily on advertising revenue.

BUSH DEMANDS THE DEMOCRATS FUND HIS WAR!

WASHINGTON—President Bush sternly pressed Democrats to approve money to fund the Iraq war "without strings and without delay" before leaving town for the Christmas holidays, something congressional leaders have already indicated they will not do.

After more failed attempts to pass legislation ordering troops home from Iraq, Democrats have said they plan to sit on Bush's $196 billion request for war spending until next year.

Inside the Ron Paul conspiracy

Maybe you've heard rumors about an explosive newspaper expose on a major political figure that would rock the political world just as the presidential voting is about to begin.

We haven't either.

But we do know that today is when this newspaper blows the top off of the Ron Paul Conspiracy, that vast unorganized protest movement that has silently become one of the more interesting political phenomena of the current election season.

A Times reporter -- we'll call him James Rainey to protect his identity -- has managed to penetrate the Paul presidium.

In his story he recounts for the very first time the shockingly ordinary details of a movement of thousands of disparate, dissatisfied people, some of whom want an end to the Iraq war, an end to gun controls and the IRS, an end to laws banning marijuana and a return to the gold standard, whatever that means.

BREAKING: Hostages Taken At Clinton Campaign Office!

A man claiming to have a bomb strapped to his chest seized hostages at the campaign office for Clinton earlier today, police and witnesses have said.

Clinton, who was not at the office in Rochester, New Hampshire, cancelled a speaking date in Virginia, Democratic Party officials said.

New Hampshire's state police sent bomb units to the scene, according to media reports.

"A young woman with a 6-month or 8-month-old infant came rushing into the store just in tears, and she said, 'You need to call 911. A man has just walked into the Clinton office, opened his coat and showed us a bomb strapped to his chest with duct tape'," witness Lettie Tzizik told WMUR TV.

New Hampshire State Police Maj Michael Hambrook told CNN the man had freed some hostages but was holding others. { FULL STORY }

YOUTUBE DEBATE : RON PAUL VS MCCAIN

Filed Under: Labels:

The Republican CNN/YouTube debate looked more like an episode of Jerry Springer than a presidential debate. Senator John McCain was asked a question about taxes and decided to go way off topic and attack Rep. Ron Paul for his stance on Iraq and wanting to bring the troops home.

McCain accused Paul of what he called the same sort of appeasement that allowed Hitler to take power and WWII to happen, and told him he’d just returned from Iraq and said he had a message for Ron from “the troops” — and the audience let him have it. Paul put it right back in his face by reminding him that he has received more donations from active duty military personnel than any other Republican candidate

What Are The Presidential Candidates Favorite TV Shows?

That’s right, kids. We’re in an seemingly endless occupation of a foreign nation that wants us out and our civil liberties are eroded every day. Our great-grandchildren will still be grappling with the debts accrued during this administration. As horror author Stephen King points out, we’re still debating whether waterboarding is torture. But what we all want to know about, according to our incisive media, is what the presidential contenders watch on TV. Here’s Chris “Life is a Campaign” Matthews’ take, but keep in mind he was joined by every other outlet as well.

Carson Daly Gives The Writers Strike a Big Middle Finger

NEW YORK (AP) — NBC's "Last Call with Carson Daly" is about to become the first late-night talk show to defy the writers strike and resume production.

Daly, who is not a member of the Writers Guild, will begin taping new episodes of his Burbank-based show this week for airing next week, an NBC spokesperson confirmed Tuesday.

The half-hour "Last Call" airs at 1:35 a.m. EST weeknights, but whether Daly's first new episode would air next Monday or Tuesday was initially unclear. No guests were disclosed.

"The Writers Guild of America, East joins our colleagues of the Writers Guild of America, West in expressing our profound disappointment with Carson Daly's decision to return to work," the guild said in a statement that also commended other late-night talk show hosts for showing solidarity with their writers. "We thank them and hope that Mr. Daly will reconsider his decision, including the soliciting of scab writers to provide material for his program."

Glenn Beck Confronted by We Are Change

Prison Planet
Members of We Are Change Ohio were threatened with arrest and questioned by members of the Secret Service before and after confronting CNN host Glenn Beck this past weekend about his efforts to link Ron Paul supporters with terrorists, during public appearances at which Beck was promoting his new book.

Pro-Ron Paul demonstrators were waiting for Beck as he arrived at two separate events in Ohio, but those who tried to question Beck about his recent tirade about the Congressman's supporters being a "physical threat" that should be dealt with by the U.S. military were quickly booted out by security and threatened with arrest by police if they re-entered the bookstore.

Beck and his mindless sycophants applauded as Change members were frog-marched out of the building for asking a question.

Keith Olbermann made a cameo appearance as a cartoon character on Fox's The Simpsons Sunday night in which he berated Marge in a dream for using her TiVo device to fast-forward through commercials. Calling her a "content burglar," he told her, "You've been watching TV shows but skipping the commercials that pay for them. That makes you the worst person in the world." Plagued by guilt, Marge then tried to make amends by watching commercials for hours on end.

Rudy Giuliani , Paul Singer , and California in 2008

What does Paul Singer , California , Rudy Giuliani doing in 2008 ?

Who is Paul Singer? He and Rudy Giuliani would prefer you not think too much about it.

Singer, who founded the multibillion dollar hedge fund Elliott Associates, has raised $200,000 for Giuliani. He flies Giuliani around in his jet.

And, as of September, his $175,000 contribution was the sole backing for the Republican scheme to split up California's electoral votes. Instead of all the electoral votes in the country's most populous state going to the state's winner (almost surely the Democrat), the ballot initiative would throw the loser (the Republican) his percentage, potentially swinging the election.
